The Social Services Department is comprised of primarily two divisions: The Community Action Program (CAP) and Area Agency on Aging.
Gila Bend Community Action Program
Our mission is to improve lives and strengthen our community, ultimately helping individuals and families achieve self-sufficiency and become self-supporting.
The Gila Bend Community Action Program (CAP) assists the citizens of Gila Bend to help them live their lives better; one child, one senior citizen, one person at a time. Our program services are designed to help low-income people triumph over poverty, achieve self-sufficiency and shape strong futures for themselves, their families and their communities.
A holistic approach is taken as we focus on Case Management. We utilize a wide variety of tools to help our clients achieve their goals from direct emergency financial assistance to, for example, weatherizing their home. Short-term emergency services such as emergency food boxes and referrals to food stamps and unemployment benefits are provided along with long-term solutions such as referrals to job training and employment or disability referrals for those that are unable to work. Transportation assistance is provided to link our clients with employment, health care, and other social service needs.
Gila Bend Senior Center
The Gila Bend Senior Center is a great place to be for those who are age sixty or older and their spouse...
Monday through Friday, a nutritional meal is served at noon by staff and friendly volunteers. We also provide Home Delivered Meal service to qualified individuals. Our suggested meal contribution is $2.00 per meal for participants age 60+ and their spouse. Non-seniors guests are welcomed to have lunch with their senior friends for a fee of $4.50 per meal.
Before lunch, enjoy a game of pool, visit while making arts and crafts or join in with a friendly game of cards. After lunch, we offer a wild game of chair volleyball, bingo, and on special holidays, we celebrate. Other activities include walking, food programs, health related discussions and workshops, shopping and travel. Transportation is provided to and from the center daily. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday we provide transportation to the local stores for shopping. Once a month we take participants to the Buckeye/Avondale area for more extensive shopping. For the convenience of our participants a medical run to the Phoenix Metro area is provide twice a month. Monthly parties are a time for fun and excitement. If there is no holiday that month we make one!!! The Senior Center also provides excursion trips to a variety of places. Museums, Casinos, desert tours, are among a few of our trips. Some of our most memorable trips included a train ride down the Grand Canyon, a three-day visit to Tombstone, and a trip to San Diego.
